In the consultancy industry, standards are important tools for efficient, sustainable projects. For Marcus Nyström at AFRY, formerly ÅF Pöyry, SSG’s pipe standard SSG7650 is used diligently when it comes to designing installations.
“Our projects would have been both more expensive and more time-consuming without SSG7650,” says Marcus Nyström.
Marcus Nyström is the Lead engineer mechanical and plant design at AFRY, which was formerly known as ÅF Pöyry. In this role, he manages a team of designers working on a number of pipe and installation design projects, and he holds overall responsibility for the quality delivered by the team. Besides leading the team, he also controls the detailed work to ensure that what they supply is what customers require.
“My work can involve anything from concept studies to final documentation for the installation,” says Marcus Nyström. “I also maintain all contact with customers and provide a link between them and our designers.”
Standards have an important part to play in Marcus’s job as a consultant, and he has come into contact with SSG Standards on a number of occasions.
“SSG’s standards are distributed among consultancies and established,” says Marcus Nyström. “People often consult SSG’s standards early on in projects, often before the EN standards. SSG’s standards are user-friendly and easy to understand. They are formulated according to the industry’s installations and working methods.”
Working on the basis of established standards saves both time and money.
“You never have to start from the ground up when you have a standard available, and you can assess which components are to be used early on in projects,” says Marcus Nyström. “This reduces project design time and also gives us a good idea of what will be required, particularly in the specific elements where SSG standards are available.”
One standard that Marcus has returned to on many occasions is SSG’s pipe standard SSG7650 Piping – recommendations for the selection, classification and inspection of materials and components. SSG7650 provides support and advice for anyone aiming to design a pipe system and recommendations with regard to which materials and components should be used, depending on the media that the pipe will contain.
“Step one when designing a pipe system involves looking at which media types are to contain, and then we use SSG7650 to help us,” says Marcus Nyström. “This contains media codes and also an assessment of the fluid group, and this information is absolutely crucial when it comes to deciding which materials and components are to be used in the pipe system. It also shows what type of documentation will be required.”
The standard also assists with interpretation of legal regulations, which is not always all that straightforward a task.
“SSG7650 provides a guide to how we should apply the Swedish Work Environment Authority regulations for pressurised equipment, AFS 2016:1 and AFS 2017:3,” says Marcus Nyström. “The standards are good but very ‘legal’, and not always all that easy to understand. SSG7650 is more practical, and more applicable for the things we do.”
In Marcus’s opinion, it would have been more difficult to design a pipe system without SSG7650 and the standard helps to save both time and money.
“It makes it harder to decide what material to use if I do not know which medium is to be contained in a pipe and what fluid group it belongs to, I would need to get advice from an expert in order to make that assessment, and this would make projects more expensive and more time-consuming,” concludes Marcus Nyström.
